Two years ago, my daughter Maile Pearl made history as the first infant ever allowed onto the Senate floor. I was overwhelmed with emotion as my Senate colleagues — both Democrats and Republicans — applauded our entrance.
Today, I am sickened that so many of those same Republican colleagues plan to vote to confirm a Supreme Court nominee who supported an organization that doesn’t believe my daughter Maile, or her sister Abigail — both of whom were conceived using IVF — should even exist.
Amy Coney Barrett, Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court, once supported an organization that even believes doctors who use IVF to help people start families should be criminalized. And just this week during her confirmation hearing, she refused to answer whether she believes IVF, a technology that has helped countless women like me start and grow their own families, is tantamount to manslaughter.
Judge Barrett’s attacks on women’s health care don’t end there:
At last week’s hearing, Judge Barrett said she did not believe Roe v. Wade was a “superprecedent,” which means she thinks it is something that can be overturned.
She has also made it clear that she is willing to overturn the Affordable Care Act. To put it another way: We’re in the middle of a global pandemic considering the nomination of someone who would dismantle a healthcare coverage system that is helping save lives right now!
I am proud to oppose Judge Barrett’s confirmation to the Supreme Court for all these reasons.
But if you want to keep me in the U.S. Senate where I can continue to speak out, make a contribution to support my reelection campaign today. You can donate here:

Putting Judge Barrett’s extreme right-wing views aside, Mitch McConnell needs to get his priorities in order.
Millions of Americans are out of work due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Families are struggling to put food on the table. We should not be confirming any Supreme Court justices right now, just a couple weeks ahead of election day as Americans are already voting, especially when the Senate still hasn’t passed a COVID-19 relief bill.
These are all the reasons why I will work as hard as I can every day from now until the final vote trying to ensure my Republican colleagues fully consider the impact of their vote — especially those who cheered as my daughter came onto the Senate floor but are now on the precipice of voting to confirm someone who may believe she shouldn’t even exist.
All my best,
Tammy Duckworth
