It’s a pleasure to share with you this Oct. 21 New York Times article about the artist Sue Coe, who has done so much to elucidate through her art and her books the plight of farmed animals and other victims of abuse. Sue is an intrepid “propagandist” for social justice and animal liberation. Her rendering of the agony and terror of chickens and other animals trapped in food production is unsurpassed. Sue has created several artworks especially for United Poultry Concerns over the years. “The Screaming Hen,” featured here (alluding to Edvard Munch’s famous depictions of the “Scream” he said he heard echoing through Nature), captures what must surely be the innermost cri de cœur of every imprisoned hen.
