Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi warned voters that the fate of the presidency could be decided by state delegations in the House if neither Joe Biden nor Donald Trump decisively win the Electoral College -- a growing possibility given this year’s expected delays in mail-in ballot counting and Trump’s incessant calls for a declared victor on election night.
Right now, Republicans control 26 delegations while Democrats control only 22. Pelosi has urged voters to keep key House races in mind when casting their ballots this November, reaffirming that the “Constitution says that a candidate must receive a majority of the state delegations to win” and that “we must achieve that majority of delegations or keep the Republicans from doing so.”
But House races in critical states are extremely tight -- and they’re only expected to grow tighter as Republicans invest millions into taking back the House to secure their new ploy to keep Trump in power. In fact, FiveThirtyEight’s latest polling analysis shows that the GOP’s chances of winning Congress in November have only grown since April despite Trump’s dwindling polling leads.
