In 2013, the Supreme Court's ruling in Shelby County v. Holder effectively gutted the Voting Rights Act. That meant the 2016 election was the first presidential election without the full protections of the Voting Rights Act in more than 50 years.

And next November, when voters enter the voting booth to cast their ballot for the next President of the United States, we're likely to be left without the Voting Rights Act's safeguarding again.

Tonight, millions of Americans will tune in to tonight's presidential debate aired by ABC News and Univision. And ten candidates will take the stage at one of the nation's largest historically black colleges and universities, Texas Southern University, in Houston.

Our fight is about whether our leaders choose to hear every voice and count every vote. Because we know that voting is the bedrock on which our community's future and your ambitions are built. That's why we need to make sure that the fight for voting rights is front and center in tonight's #DemDebate.
