The toughest challenges demand the boldest ideas. That’s why Mercy Corps identifies ideas that can break through cycles of poverty and deliver benefits to millions of people in the developing world.
Our COVID‑19 response worldwide includes the installation of hand-washing stations (like this one in Indonesia), mask distribution and community outreach.
With the emergence of COVID‑19 in the Southeast Asian nation of Timor-Leste, it became crucial for the country to adopt disease prevention measures like hand-washing. But nearly three in four people lack access to facilities with soap and water. Many critical sites around Dili lacked necessary hand-washing stations, especially at the entrances to important buildings. Timor-Leste also faces a huge pollution problem, with 1 billion plastic bags and 125 million plastic bottles discarded every year. Much of the plastic waste is found washed up on beaches. In response, Mercy Corps teams, in partnership with the Plastic Solutions Alliance, helped turn one problem into a solution by converting discarded plastic water bottles into public hand-washing stations, made from more than 100,000 recycled plastic bottles so far. We’ve set a goal to raise $100,000 by October 30 to fund more innovative solutions like this, and to help people across the world who are facing poverty, conflict and hunger. Will you help reach our goal with a first-time gift today? Together, we can make up to 5x the difference in the lives of children, women and men. Since 2015, Mercy Corps has been able to raise an average of $4 in government and foundation grants compared to every $1 in individual gifts. Your gift today will be combined with grants from other sources, enabling us to rush up to 5 times more lifesaving assistance.
Thanks in part to humanitarians like you, people vulnerable to the spread of COVID‑19 in Timor-Leste now have access to clean water, which is also providing an environmentally safe way to recycle plastic waste to help protect the beautiful island nation’s environment and marine life. Your gift to Mercy Corps helps make projects like this one — which is saving lives and protecting our planet — possible. Make a gift today — together we can have up to 5x the impact for vulnerable communities around the world. Thank you for being part of this community of humanitarians, supporting innovative solutions to life-threatening problems.
