Children and Families in Trouble: Census Data Show Declining Health Coverage & Enduring Poverty

On Tuesday, the Census Bureau released its annual reports on poverty, income, and health insurance coverage. The data show resounding signs of trouble for our country's lowest-income residents. Most alarmingly, the number of people with health insurance dropped for the first time since 2009. And while poverty continued a sluggish decline in 2018, poverty rates for children and young adults remained unacceptably high, with troublingly large racial disparities. CLASP responded with a statement on Tuesday providing our quick response followed by a longer brief yesterday providing deeper analysis and policy implications.

Recent Event

On September 5, CLASP hosted the Reconnecting Youth Campaign fall convening. The event brought together nearly 50 young adults, youth workforce advocates, and professionals. Following the meeting, advocates met with Congressional staffers.
