Hi, John --
I didn’t want you to miss this: The New York Times has endorsed our campaign, stating that, with my background in science, I “would be a refreshing addition to a Congress.” Here is an excerpt from the piece:
“For years, she focused on research to help make solar energy more affordable. Now, she hopes to put that scientific background to work in Washington to help protect the environment — a key issue in a district with miles of shoreline and farmland. She has promised to defend the Affordable Care Act and supported an effort to extend health care to uninsured employees at Stony Brook University.
This would be an especially good time for Washington to have the kind of scientific expertise and perspective Ms. Goroff would bring.”
This endorsement comes right after Newsday endorsed our campaign, and at the start of National Chemistry Week, a program to highlight the ways we use chemistry in our everyday lives.
During my recent interviews with The New York Times, Newsday, and Gizmodo Earther, I was reminded of a personal story from the time I was in a high school science competition. As part of the competition, I had to answer the question: What is a scientist?
As a 17-year-old, I answered: “A scientist is someone who searches for the truth and uses it to make the world a better place.”
Now, I'm stepping away from the lab to do something I've never done before, because over the past four years, we have witnessed leaders in Washington like my opponent Lee Zeldin deny science for political gain. But science isn't political -- it's about the search for truth and the desire to make things better.
As a scientist in Congress, I will have a different approach to leadership than Zeldin. I look forward to being a resource for all of my fellow representatives to make sure that Democrats and Republicans alike have access to the best information available -- because I know fact-based decision making will create a better world for all of us.
Lee Zeldin's anti-science and pro-corporate record speaks for itself. He's voted to strip basic health care from those who need it. He voted to prevent federal agencies from factoring climate change into their consideration of new regulations. He voted against the HEROES Act, which would bring needed funding to our state and school districts. He co-sponsored a bill to allow for concealed carry of guns here in New York. He even voted against restoring the fundamental rights of Americans by reinstating the Voting Rights Act. And he promoted an unproven drug as a cure to the novel coronavirus.
Over the next two weeks, my team will continue doing everything in our power to reach voters with my pro-science message, but I need you to understand where we're at. Our budget is tight, and outside Republicans, seeing Trump’s loyal sycophant in trouble, are injecting $2 million for these final two weeks in a last-gasp effort to blunt our momentum. And while our movement is growing each day, this race for NY-01 sits on a knife’s edge.
We're in a statistical tie and need to build our budget to ensure we can invest more at a moment's notice. What happens next will be what causes us to win or lose this race -- and I don't want to leave any margin for error.
You are what make our efforts possible. Today, I am asking you to help us continue fighting for truth and a better future for all of us.
Before tonight’s event with Speaker Pelosi, I’m hoping you will please pitch in $5, $10, $25, $50, or whatever you can to help us put an end to leadership on Long Island that casts doubt on science and truth. >> [link removed]
It's time for real solutions that make our lives better.
With gratitude,
Nancy
