John,
Every senator must oppose Judge Amy Coney Barrett's nomination to the Supreme Court.
CREW does not generally take a position on judicial nominations, but in this case, the future of our democracy may be on the line.
President Trump has said repeatedly that he expects the upcoming election to be decided by the Supreme Court and that he wants Judge Barrett to be confirmed before November 3rd. These statements are not subtle: Trump wants Barrett on the court so that he can maintain his grip on power, even if he loses the election.
Call your senators today at 202-224-3121 and ask that they reject Judge Barrett’s nomination, for the future of our democracy.
If Barrett had pledged to recuse from all election-related cases, she would have shown the American people that she planned, at least in this crucial context, to be an impartial justice and a fair arbiter of the law. Unfortunately, she refused.
That alone was concerning enough, but Barrett went further. She was not willing to express an opinion on whether the president could postpone an election, even though the answer is clear in the Constitution: he cannot. She also refused to say whether intimidating voters at the polls is illegal, even though federal law states in clear language that it is. It is hard to overstate how troubling it is that a Supreme Court nominee was unwilling to affirm basic laws, if doing so meant contradicting the president.
We must conclude that Judge Barrett’s nomination to the Supreme Court, based on what we know now, can only be viewed as a threat to our democratic system. Please contact your senators at 202-224-3121 to relay your concerns about Barrett’s nomination.
Thank you for standing with us,
