Dear John,

The Internal Market Bill is being discussed in parliament.

The House of Lords are now debating and scrutinising the controversial Bill.

The House overwhelmingly passed a “motion of regret” against the Bill. It’s reassuring the House has registered its dissent, and it signals there will be serious dispute. But we need more than symbolic gestures.

The Internal Market Bill goes back on the international agreement we made with the EU.

It undermines the Good Friday Agreement, on which peace and stability in Northern Ireland depends. How can the UK be trusted in any future agreements if we go back on our word now? <[link removed]> <[link removed]>

We can still show the government their reckless law-breaking does not reflect our values, or the values of this country. We can still put up a fight in the Lords.

This Bill endangers not just the Withdrawal Agreement and the historic peace agreement in Northern Ireland, but it threatens the UK’s international reputation as a trustworthy nation.

We have just weeks to reach a deal with Europe, and avert a second national crisis. <[link removed]>

As negotiations become more strained, we need to show Europe, and the rest of the world, we can be trusted in future trade deals.

Even if the Bill becomes law, we can show the world the rest of the UK does not support this government and their law-breaking. There are some people in the UK who still value law and fair play. <[link removed]>

The House of Lords’ role is to scrutinise bills and uphold the rule of law. It’s their job to ask MPs to reconsider laws which may be against the public good.

Add your name to the open letter, and urge the Lords to stand against this dangerous Bill. Sign the letter today.

The UK and Europe must reach a deal by the end of the month. We cannot afford to start ripping up the Withdrawal Agreement and breaking international law.

We must show willing to compromise and work with the EU to get a recovery-boosting deal. Our lives and our livelihoods are at stake. <[link removed]>

Best wishes,
