Hi John,
The actions we take in the next week will make history.
I don’t know what age you are,John, but chances are you are older than the 14, 15, 16 year olds organising the global climate strikes on September 20th. In 10 years, if we haven’t already cut our climate pollution in half globally, these children will be in their mid-twenties facing a hothouse world. They are inheriting not just the sins of the past, but the actions of the present.
But there is hope, this wave of youth determination and courage has the power to force real change.
In the last few weeks, school strikers have planned 10 major protest rallies for Friday September 20th, and adults have organised over 60 support actions around Ireland.
This needs to be big. And that’s why I’m asking you to join in, to make it big.
Will you join thousands of other people across Ireland at #ClimateStrike events on September 20th?
Yes, I'll attend a strike near me!
So far the following student-organised marches and rallies are confirmed:
-
Dublin: Gathering 12:00 at Customs House, marching at 12:30 to Merrion Sq., rallying 13:00 - 14:00 at Merrion Sq. in front of Govt. buildings
-
Cork City: Gathering on Grand Parade St. from 12:00, marching at 12:20.
-

Drogheda: Demonstrating from 13:00 outside St. Peters's Church, West St.

And over 60 adults across the country have already signed up to run a local solidarity event in their community or outside their workplace. If you can't get to one of the mass rallies, will you join a local event? You can find all of the above actions on our map here at this link.
Yes, I'll attend a strike near me!
If there is no local action near you, will you host one? The 60 hosts so far are people just like you, most of whom have never organised a climate-related event.
We have a group of volunteers who will be on hand to help you run your local climate action. All you have to do is sign up here and they will be in touch to help you get started.
Yes I will host a local event!
Keep it simple! Get a group together and stand on the street at 1pm (or a time that suits you) and take a photo in support of the strikes. Post on social media and tag #ClimateStrike
Why not go big! Here are some ideas for events which you can carry out in your university, workplace or neighbourhood on the 20th:
-
Hand out flyers and stickers
-
Host a themed coffee morning
-
Take a day of your annual leave on the 20th
-
Chalk slogans onto footpaths and roads
…or anything else you can think of! Now is a great opportunity to get creative. Here are some resources to get you started!
We’re down to the wire. The science is clear - what we do now makes all the difference. School students are calling on everyone to join forces for action. This September, we have a rare opportunity to the eyes of the public and of policy makers, and really show that we are there alongside our young people, demanding a better future for all.
We know that these shows of power by school students can change the story. It has been just over a year since a solitary 15 year old girl first sat outside the gates of her Swedish Parliament instead of going to school. This set in motion a chain of events that has caused leaders across the world, including our own, to acknowledge the disproportionate role that current governments have in stemming this crisis.
To change everything, we need everyone.
“You don’t need to spend two weeks on a boat to avert our climate emergency. You just need to do everything you can, with everyone you can, to change everything you can.” - Greta Thunberg, 16 year old Swedish climate activist who travelled by boat to the UN climate talks in New York
The climate is changing faster than anticipated, and policy makers across the world are razing carbon sinks, drilling for more oil and gas, destroying the land of indigenous communities and locking us into a hothouse world. The outlook is terrifying.
To be honest with you, I’m worried that we’re not going to push strong enough for the drastic changes we need in the time we have. But I’m hopeful, because I know how many of you read these emails and I have been bowled over by the energy and relentless drive of those with a vision for a better world, and the will to see it come to fruition.
You win big when you ask big.
And that’s why I’m asking you to please get involved on September 20th, and beyond.
I'm in!
Together, we make change happen,
