John,

As the president of Brady California, I am so proud to share with you that we have accomplished a major legislative win in our state. After the tireless effort of Brady California members and activists across the country, Governor Newsom signed four lifesaving bills into law — including our priority bill on handgun microstamping. This is a victory that is 15 years in the making, and one that is very special to me personally.

That's me in the black t-shirt with a photo of my son, George Scott. He was only 24-years-old when he was shot and killed in July 1996. I carry this photo of him everywhere I go because 24 years later, his case remains unsolved.

George isn't alone. There are thousands upon thousands of unsolved gun homicide cases in our country, leaving countless families without any closure —families just like mine. But our victory in California gives me hope.

Microstamping laws like the one we just passed in California are a model for the entire country. Microstamping technology leaves unique markings, or “microstamps,” on bullet casings so that law enforcement can trace evidence from crime scenes to the gun that fired them. This revolutionizes law enforcement's ability to use reliable evidence to identify shooters — like the one who killed George — apprehend them before they do more harm, and hold them accountable.

Since George was murdered, I have dedicated my life to preventing gun violence. This fight is long, but I am emboldened by the dedication of our Brady activists in ushering in this win. Together, we testified, lobbied, called, and emailed, sending roughly 15,000 messages to state legislators calling for the passage of this crucial gun reform policy. In addition to microstamping, Gov. Newsom signed three other gun violence prevention bills into law. These lifesaving laws will make out-of-state extreme risk orders enforceable in California, hold gun dealer’s accountable for irresponsible or unlawful business practices, and allow gun and ammo dealer inspections at gun shows.

John, these victories in California show what we can accomplish together — even if Congress is gridlocked and Donald Trump refuses to take action against gun violence. I am ready to keep fighting and to pass microstamping laws in states across the country, will you join me? Donate today to help keep up the momentum and save lives across the country:

About Our #VotingAccessSavesLives campaign

A partnership with March For Our Lives and Team ENOUGH, our #VotingAccessSavesLives is mobilizing Americans to join the fight for voting access. We believe that in order to prevent gun violence, we need to vote out NRA-bought politicians and elect gun safety champions. But we can't do that if we do not each have access to ballot box! We must each join the fight for a safer America. Learn more and join us at bradyunited.org/democracy [[link removed]] .
