Calls grow for more financial support from Government for Nottingham businesses
**A message from City Council Deputy Leader, Cllr Sally Longford:**
sally longford
Covid infection rates in Nottingham have been falling gradually over the last few days but they remain very high. We all need to continue to observe Hands, Face, Space and the Rule of Six, as well as not mixing indoors with anyone not from our household or support bubble to stop the spread of the virus and avoid putting pressure on the NHS.
Although the restrictions are vitally important, were really concerned about the impact on local businesses, particularly in the hospitality industry.
Weve written to Chancellor Rishi Sunak calling for more financial support to be provided urgently by the Government to protect livelihoods and jobs in the city. Others have too including the Nottingham Hospitality Association and the Director of Castle Rock Brewery who, as highlighted by Nottingham South MP Lilian Greenwood in the House of Commons today, fears the company is on the verge of breakdown.

*Clean air = better health*
Nottingham clean air
Cleaner air helps improve respiratory health which is more important than ever during the current coronavirus pandemic. Here in Nottingham, weve been at the forefront of tackling air pollution for some time now through projects such as the retrofitting NCT buses with clean exhaust technology and requiring every taxi and private hire vehicle in the city to be low emission.
Im really pleased to share the news that weve now got two more ways to help improve air quality in the city

*Worlds first OEM electric refuse collection vehicles to hit the streets in Nottingham!*
OEM bin lorry
Two new electric refuse collection vehicles will soon be emptying household bins across the city. The Council has purchased two of the worlds first fully electric refuse collection vehicles to support our aim to be the UKs first carbon neutral city by 2028. The vehicles will replace diesel equivalents and are together expected to save the council 32,000 per year in running costs and reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the city by 52 tonnes per year the equivalent of 2,000 trees.
These vehicles are yet another first for Nottingham, adding to our award-winning, innovative fleet of zero emission vehicles which already boasts the first fully electric sweepers, cage tippers and minibuses to be run by a local authority in the UK. We are leading by example and electrifying the refuse collection fleet is a major step forward in our aims to deliver clean air in our city and a huge step towards our carbon neutral ambition. *Try out an electric scooter in Nottingham!*
Esctooter
Were launching a trial of over 200 electric scooters for people living and working in Nottingham. On-street rental will be available and can be activated by using an App, with short and long term hire options. The trial will be for 12 months and key workers will be able to sign up for long-term rentals at a discounted price.
Electric scooters offer a fun new greener travel option to help take cars off our roads, reducing congestion and improving air quality. We do ask that anyone using these scooters is considerate of pedestrians and does not ride them on the pavement. Find out more about e-scooter hire in Nottingham [ [link removed] ]
