As we begin the last two weeks of this election, there are a lot of different scenarios we are preparing for, given that we have a President threatening not to leave office peacefully. We can’t afford to leave anything to chance.
That’s why I need your help in supporting two great U.S. House candidates fighting to flip two particular Republican seats. These aren’t just pickup opportunities — they could help decide the next President of the United States.
Kathleen Williams is running in Montana, and Alyse Galvin is running in Alaska. They have a lot in common. They’re both outstanding public servants, they’re both running after narrowly losing in 2018, and they’re among the many incredible women candidates who are running.
But here’s something you probably didn’t know: There’s a chance their elections could help decide the outcome of the presidential election. No, seriously.
If there is a dispute over which electors to seat, that decision would be made by the full Congress. But under the 12th Amendment, if no presidential candidate gets a majority of the Electoral College votes, the election is decided by the House alone. And that vote would be conducted in a very unusual way — with each state delegation getting a single vote. That means California, with fifty-three members, gets the same number of votes as Alaska or Montana, which have only one.
That means that if we flip these seats, we also flip those delegations , and put Democrats in a much stronger position in the event the Electoral College ends in a tie or without a majority for Joe Biden. And in a year that has been unusual in every way, we have to be prepared for everything.
Trust me, none of us want it to come to that, and that’s why we have to work as hard as we can for these next two weeks to run through the tape and win a landslide in the House, the Senate, and finally kick Donald Trump out of office. But we need to prepare for every eventuality.
