Dear Friends,
If you haven't already, please sign our joint petition [ [link removed] ] urging the Republican Judiciary Committee leadership to protect the right to asylum by increasing refugee admissions in 2021. The petition closes tomorrow, so please take action now! And then be sure to get out the vote!

As you know, the Trump Administration's ongoing xenophobic attacks against immigrants and refugees has translated into the decimation of legal protections and pathways for migrants, and the rapid decline of the refugee admissions program for people feeling persecution, torture, and threats to their safety. *
*
This fiscal year, refugee admissions were cut to 18,000, the lowest ever since the Refugee Act was passed by Congress in 1980. Prior to Trump, admissions goals were set at 95,000, still far below need. In 2020, fewer than 9,500 people have been granted asylum in the U.S. while tens of thousands wait in shelters and encampments in Mexico under Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) or Remain in Mexico. The pandemic has made matters worse, further jeopardizing migrants' health and safety, and complicating conditions in the camps. The shut-down of immigration courts has caused asylum seekers to miss key deadlines, putting their cases at risk of being arbitrarily thrown out.
Just this week, the Supreme Court agreed to take up the case of Remain in Mexico [ [link removed] ], (as well as a second immigration policy case regarding the use of Pentagon funds to pay for the construction of the border wall). Imposed in 2019, despite court rulings declaring it in violation of international obligations and domestic law, Remain in Mexico has compounded the confusion and crisis at the border and has resulted in one of the worst humanitarian crises in modern history.
*The right to seek asylum is a universal human right, a right protected by U.S. law.* Please help us take action to demand an increase in refugee resettlements in 2021 [ [link removed] ].*

And with less than 2 weeks away from election day, one thing is certain: we need everyone to get out the vote, and to vote for human rights!
Among attempts to suppress the vote were intentional delays in granting citizenship to 300,000 [ [link removed] ] potential new voters. Even with these and other tactics to keep immigrants and people of color from voting, we have seen record numbers of early voting. Newly eligible immigrant voters in key swing states may well shift the outcome of national and local elections. Despite fears, intimidation, language barriers, and a pandemic, people are getting out to vote! "*Let's help our communities and support our voting eligible friends and family to cast their ballots! *"*"
