Sometimes, voter suppression is obvious: closing polling places or removing drop boxes in certain ZIP codes… purging voter rolls en masse. We've all heard the stories. But sometimes, it's more subtle. What might seem like annoying inconveniences to some are real obstacles for many.
Care to guess how many trips to the DMV it took for "Steven" to get registered to vote when he moved to Virginia last year?
The short answer is—too many.
Confusing and complicated voter registration processes are yet another barrier to voting. And they are especially difficult to navigate during a pandemic!
Steven was stunned at just how complicated the process was. In Minnesota, all he had to do was show up on election day with his ID and BOOM—he could register the same day and vote! But in Virginia? That required multiple trips to the DMV, each one with a new piece of documentation. Thankfully, with the urging of CAP and others, Virginia has since updated its laws, to eliminate many barriers to voting, including those that Steven faced.
Regardless of how determined a prospective voter might be, many do not have the transportation, gas money, time off from work, childcare or other resources to navigate a complicated system. See where I'm going there? Some election systems in our own country are designed to suppress specific voter demographics.
You see, the election is now less than two weeks away—and our team is relentless in their efforts to make sure every person has the opportunity to vote on or before November 3rd.
But our resources are stretched and your gift is critically needed.
