Six-month-old Kessem Kiviti cannot even walk yet, but the Trump administration is already attacking her—simply for being the daughter of same-sex parents. That is why Immigration Equality and Lambda Legal filed a lawsuit today to prevent the State Department from denying citizenship to the children of LGBTQ families.
Roee and Adiel Kiviti are married U.S. citizens who were told that their child is not entitled to citizenship. The dads are listed on Kessem’s birth certificate, and they are the only parents she has ever known. But the State Department still insists that Kessem was “born out of wedlock.”
This is a fight for marriage equality, and a fight for the fundamental right of citizenship. The Trump administration is treating Roee and Adiel as second-class citizens and Kessem as if she is not a citizen at all. The administration has been abundantly clear it will ignore the law and the Constitution. We urgently need your help to keep going until we achieve justice for this family.
This is the fourth case Immigration Equality has filed on behalf of families harmed by the State Department’s discriminatory policy. We intend to win these cases, not only for the beautiful children we represent, but to make sure this does not happen to any other LGBTQ families.
