Dear John,
Boris Johnson has silenced Parliament, his ministers question whether they have to obey the law, and now his supporters in the press are attacking the independence of our judiciary.
Today, following the ruling by Scottish judges that ministers had acted unlawfully in suspending Parliament, the Daily Mail went on the attack, criticising one for being part of a charity promoting good relations with France and, even more ludicrously, suggesting another could not be trusted because he is a “jazz lover”.
That newspaper has form, of course, because it previously branded judges who ruled Parliament deserved a say on Brexit as “enemies of the people”.
And ministers have joined in too with one, taking a leaf straight out of Donald Trump’s playbook, claiming that “a lot of people are saying” our judges are biased.
Let us be clear: this is not just an attack on judges but on the rule of law and democracy itself.
Downing Street is rattled and getting desperate.
It is vital their £100 million propaganda campaign does not drown out our voices too.
