Mitch McConnell and the Republican party are pulling out every stop, breaking every rule, engaging in infuriating hypocrisy, and ignoring all other priorities, to seat Amy Coney Barrett on the Supreme Court as soon as possible.
Yet our two senators continue to do business as usual with decorum and deference to customs and rules that the Republicans ignore whenever it suits their purpose. Neither Harris nor Feinstein raised procedural roadblocks or adequately fought back against Republican rule-breaking. And Senator Feinstein legitimized the Republican judicial-railroad after Graham violated the quorum-rule to force a committee confirmation vote, when she publicly praised him by gushing, “This has been one of the best set of hearings that I’ve participated in.” Then she actually hugged him (while both were unmasked).
At Indivisible SF, we are calling on Sen. Feinstein to step down from her leadership role in the Senate Judiciary Committee. We are joining NARAL, MoveOn, Demand Justice, Demand Progress, and other groups, including other Indivisible chapters in this call. Sen. Feinstein has failed us by legitimizing the corrupt and undemocratic capture of the judiciary, and by doing nothing to protect her constituents from a Supreme Court comprised of right-wing extremists.
The committee vote on the Barrett nomination has now (in violation of the rules) been set for this coming Thursday, October 22. That is the last opportunity for our senators to use procedural maneuvers to delay the confirmation at the committee level. Once the Republican majority on the committee votes in favor of the nomination, it goes to the Senate floor. If McConnell calls a rare weekend session, as has indicated he will do, the final confirmation vote could be as early as this Monday, October 26th. When the nomination reaches the full Senate, our senators can (and must) use parliamentary tools to delay and obstruct the process—just as Republicans did over and over again during the Obama administration.
This is your last chance to call your Senators and let them know your demands.
- Call Senator Feinstein and tell her: STEP DOWN from leadership in the Senate Judiciary Committee! By legitimizing the Republicans’ power-grab, Senator Feinstein has failed us, her constituents.
- Call Senator Harris and tell her: DO MORE to obstruct the SCOTUS appointment! Senator Harris needs to step up and prove to her constituents that she cares about our rights, which a right-wing SCOTUS would eliminate.
Join us this Sunday for an Indivisible SF + Flip the West Phone Bank!
Sunday, October 25th at 11 AM, we’re joining forces with Flip the West for a two-hour phone banking session calling voters in priority battleground states. Flipping the Senate is a must if we want to be successful in winning any of the changes we need. Every vote counts - and every phone call you make to Get Out the Vote counts.
What you need: Everyone needs to have Zoom. We recommend using a computer for both the Zoom meeting and the phone-banking itself, as it is faster and easier.
What to expect: You will join Zoom and go to a breakout room for the state you are calling, or for training. Technical support will be available throughout the event to assist you with any issue large or small. There also will be opportunities to come together and share experiences.
Sign up and you will receive a confirmation email from Flip the West with all the information and links you need. We can’t wait to see you there!
RSVP here.
After the election: Get ready to Protect the Results
Like you, we’re worried about potential post-election dirty tricks Trump and the Republicans might pull in an attempt to stay in power. As part of Indivisible’s mobilization to Protect the Results, we’re planning a rapid-response event for November 4th at Civic Center Plaza to respond to any such attempt.
Mark your calendar for Wednesday, November 4th—the day after Election Day. We have an event page at https://www.mobilize.us/ptr/event/351412/. Stay tuned for more information.
Interested in volunteering to protect the results? Sign up here to become a volunteer and we’ll contact you.
And in the meantime, if you want to do more to protect democracy than cast your own vote, you can help get out the vote, serve as a poll worker, monitor the count, and counter disinformation. You can read more about all of these options on our blog.
Don’t delay—vote TODAY!
The time has come—the 2020 Election is NOW. If you are registered to vote, you will soon receive your ballot by mail, if it hasn’t already arrived. Considering the urgency, now is the time to follow the plan you made to vote as early as possible. Be an #OctoberVoter and get your ballot in well before November.
Tracking your ballot, before you get it and after you cast it: California is providing online, email, text, and phone hotline resources to voters to check the status of their ballot this year. San Francisco voters can track their ballot on the Voter Portal at https://sfelections.org/voterportal; voters throughout the state can sign up for ballot tracking notifications at https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/ballot-status/wheres-my-ballot.
Haven’t gotten anything in the mail about this election? Check your voter registration status right now. Yes, even California purges its voter rolls, so if you haven’t voted in a few elections, you may have been removed. If you’ve moved or changed your name, your registration may be out of date. It never hurts to check and it only takes a minute.
Not registered to vote? The deadline to register has passed, but don’t fret—ask about Conditional Voter Registration at your polling place or at the Voting Center.
Looking for guidance? The presidential race isn’t the only thing to vote on. There are California propositions and City ballot measures, and we have our ballot guides plus other resources on our vote page. This page also links to all of the information described above—it’s your one-stop shop for all the information you’ll need to make your voice heard in this election.
Make and follow your plan NOW to vote.
If you want to mail in your ballot using our beloved Postal Service, time’s running out. For dropping it off at a county drop-off location, look at your county‘s list; in San Francisco, we have 11 drop-off locations—one in every district—plus the Voting Center in front of Bill Graham Auditorium, near City Hall. If you leave it until Election Day, you can drop off your ballot at your local polling place.
Learn everything you need to know to vote in 2020.
