Friend,
32 years: That’s how long I’ve been fighting for the separation of church and state. So it should come as no surprise to you that I tend to take the long view of things – and when looking at the unprecedented threats facing religious freedom today, so should you.
As I write this, the Senate is continuing its rushed confirmation of President Trump’s nominee, Amy Coney Barrett, to the U.S. Supreme Court. With her record of hostility toward church-state separation, her nomination tops off years of sharply escalating attacks on this vitally important principle.
In turn, America’s commitment to the Constitution’s central promise of religious freedom feels more delicate now than most of us could’ve imagined only a short while ago. But here’s the truth:
I’ve never felt more committed to the defense of church-state separation, and the leading role of Americans United, than I do right now.

It’s a sad truth that the Trump administration, aided by its allies in the Christian nationalist movement, has worked tirelessly to roll back LGBTQ rights, reproductive freedom, protections for religious minorities, and the rights of taxpayers not to be forced to fund religious education.
Many of these issues could come before the Supreme Court in the near future – some almost certainly will. Facing a strong conservative bent on the court already, we know that ensuring religious freedom is used as a shield instead of a sword will surely be challenging.
But I also know that AU – and our supporters like you – are up for the challenge. That’s why, no matter what happens in the weeks ahead, AU will be first in line to fight for religious freedom.

In the end, I know our view of this foundational American principle will always prevail because, frankly, the Constitution is on our side.
Before I sign off, I’ll leave you with another piece of trivia…
73 years: That’s how long Americans United has been the leading organization solely dedicated to protecting the separation of church and state. From that day through today and beyond, our work has been made possible by generous individual supporters like you.
Thanks for being with us,
