Supporting Survivors and Victims during Domestic Violence Awareness Month

During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve seen a rise in domestic violence. As a survivor myself and having worked for a domestic violence shelter in college, this truly breaks my heart. That’s why I’ve been working to ensure victims and survivors have the support they need during the pandemic and every day.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month is an opportunity for Iowans and all Americans to bring attention to the challenges victims and survivors of domestic violence face. I’ve had the opportunity to see firsthand the critical services organizations across Iowa provide to those impacted by domestic violence – and supporting them during this pandemic continues to be one of my top priorities.

I’ve been working to ensure folks have safe housing options and are provided the relief they need during COVID-19. I’ve also been calling for critical programs, including the Sexual Assault Service Program and the Violence Against Women Act, to be provided additional funding in COVID-19 relief legislation.

If you or someone you know needs help, please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or chat with a specialist online for free and confidential support 24/7.

At a time when people who experience domestic violence are at an increased risk, I’ll never stop advocating for our survivors and victims of domestic violence.
