Dear Morningside Center friends,

In this issue, you'll find a new activity to honor the life of Breonna Taylor. Also, a lesson that has students find out about the Indigenous peoples whose lands they inhabit and create their own land acknowledgment statement. Plus, good stuff to read on managing uncertainty, gratitude, and more. Enjoy.

New on TeachableMoment
This lesson engages students in giving thanks for Breonna Taylor’s life, while offering space to share their thoughts and feelings around the tragic circumstances of her death.
Through a video, reading, and discussion, students learn about the growing effort to acknowledge the Indigenous people whose lands we inhabit - and create their own land acknowledgment statement.
What are the obstacles to a smooth and fair election in November 2020, and how might they be overcome? Students read about, discuss, and research the question.
What we're reading
"Students and educators have started a new school year in the midst of a pandemic, an economic crisis, a reckoning with racial injustice, and a divisive political climate. Everyone’s mental health is at risk, and schools are searching for ways to support young people’s well-being in addition to their academic learning." By Emily Campbell at Greater Good Magazine
"This pandemic that we're all going through feels unprecedented — but the feeling of uncertainty is not. People live through all kinds of scary things all the time....So after many hours hearing from people who graciously shared their experiences, here are seven tips I've learned about uncertainty, from people who've been there." By Sarah McCammon at Mindshift.

"The forced pivot to distance learning also typically had a welcomed side effect: Parents and school staff felt more connected as back-and-forth communications increased and appreciation grew for each other’s challenges and successes." By Kara Arundel at Education Dive.
" The truth is that the draw we feel to other Black women, hidden within gazes met, is the power to transform the world.” - Melina Abdullah
