Like so many other Emerge alums, before serving as an elected official, I was a community organizer working to advance racial equity and reform the criminal justice system.

Today, as Kentucky’s only Black woman legislator, I am fighting those same fights at the State Capitol. This work could not be more critical.

That’s why, earlier this year, I authored Breonna’s Law, a bill that would: Ban dangerous no-knock warrants Require police officers to use body cameras while engaging with the public and allow agencies to discipline police officers if they fail to use them Require police officers involved in shootings or other deadly incidents to submit to drug and alcohol testing within two hours Allow lawsuits against any state or local government official who deprives people of their civil rights

But this isn’t just a movement in Kentucky. It’s time to demand the implementation of Breonna’s Law across the country because we deserve more from our elected officials and our institutions. That’s why I’m hoping you’ll add your name as a citizen co-sponsor of my bill.

Last month after the grand jury announcement that no officers would be charged with murdering Breonna Taylor, I joined protests to peacefully demonstrate our outrage. On that Thursday evening, along with my daughter, I was arrested and spent over twelve hours in police custody.

Think about that — peaceful protesters spent more time in police custody and faced harsher charges than the officers who took the life of a young woman inside her home.

Emerge always reinforced in our training that we build power by standing together — whether we’re fighting for clean water in Martin County, or joining a movement in spite of being tear gassed by officers who have sworn to protect us. We must continue to demand freedom and equity.

The only way we can change anything is if we put fear aside and keep showing up for justice.
