“Over the course of my career, I have seen a number of challenges to our democracy. The Russian government's efforts to interfere in our election is among the most serious.”
- Robert S. Mueller
July 24, 2019
Friend,
Russia meddled in the 2016 election. The Mueller investigation confirmed the findings of every U.S. Intelligence agency.
Now, multiple government agencies have verified that foreign powers are already attempting to meddle in the 2020 election. For the sake of our democracy, we just can't afford to let it happen again.
This is a serious and urgent crisis. That's why, in the Senate, we've already put forth two bills to protect our elections from foreign influence. But Leader McConnell has blocked them both.
Our democracy is at stake. Will you sign our petition to tell Leader McConnell to immediately act to safeguard our elections against foreign interference?
One bill McConnell has blocked would require candidates, their family members, and campaign staff to report any offers of help they receive from foreign governments to the FBI. The other would require paper ballots.
Both are commonsense, essential steps toward ensuring the integrity of the 2020 election. Neither should be controversial -- except, evidently, to Leader McConnell.
By refusing to allow the Senate to vote on election security legislation, Mitch McConnell is giving Russia and other hostile adversaries the power to keep meddling in our elections. His stubborn refusal to take these threats seriously is putting our democracy at risk, and we're running out of time to put safeguards in place.
I will not stand by while Mitch McConnell allows our elections to be compromised again. Please add your name to join me in demanding that he bring this critical election security legislation to a vote.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Patrick Leahy
U.S. Senator
