Amid a pandemic, an economic free fall, a fight for racial equality, an election that couldn’t be more consequential, and an onslaught of foreign and domestic disinformation aimed at destabilizing our democracy, our right to speak up, be heard, and seek truth is crucial.
That right has never been in greater peril, both in the U.S. and around the world.
This Free Speech Week, PEN America's work has never felt more urgent. We’ve battled in the courts and in state houses to knock down book bans, defend a free press, and uphold protest rights. Foes of free expression have tried to criminalize protests, shut down debate, keep books off shelves, and punish journalists for doing their work, creating a climate that is hostile to the free exchange of ideas and speech.
