Each week, we'll be introducing you to a few of our amazing candidates -- 21 women who are ready to get to work and fight for a more progressive, more inclusive Georgia. This week, the spotlight is on Deborah Gonzalez, Sara Tindall Ghazal, and Mokah Jasmine Johnson.
This year especially, it's never been more important to elect leaders who will fight for free and fair elections -- and the right of every eligible voter to vote safely and securely. So much is at stake in this election and these three women will always fight for the right to vote when we put them in office.
FORMER STATE REP. DEBORAH GONZALEZ DISTRICT ATTORNEY, WESTERN JUDICIAL CIRCUIT
Deborah knows what it's like to fight for Georgians' right to choose their elected leaders through the ballot box -- she just won a major victory in the GA Supreme Court allowing Western Judicial Circuit voters to pick their chief prosecutor.
While our Republican governor tried to cancel the District Attorney election and install a hand-picked crony in the position, Deborah spent months speaking up against his plan. And the Court unanimously sided with Deborah -- telling the governor that this election must continue.
Georgians can count on Deborah to do all she can to ensure they're able to exercise their right to vote.
Sara has spent most of her professional life fighting for voting rights -- both in Georgia and abroad.
Her election integrity work began at The Carter Center, where, along with former President Jimmy Carter, she focused on expanding democracy worldwide. She knows that voting is fundamental to the health of those democracies -- and ours. It's how we, the people, can make our voices heard and hold leaders to account.
She'll fight to expand voting access, ensure the security of our elections, and end a long legacy of GOP voter suppression in Georgia.
Mokah, a naturalized citizen from Jamaica, knows the importance of civic engagement. Three years ago, she co-founded the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement to advocate for civil and human rights protections, after discrimination by Athens businesses. With ten years of experience as an educator, Mokah has led "Know Your Rights" seminars within the local public school system.
Mokah served on the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections in 2018. That same year, she launched the "Get on the Bus and Vote" tour to encourage voter turnout in Athens for the 2018 gubernatorial election.
Now, Mokah is heading to the state Assembly to secure every citizen's right to participate in our democracy by casting their vote.
We're so proud to support Deborah, Sara, and Mokah in their fight for a more progressive, more inclusive Georgia. But they won't win their races without the support of folks like you.
