Radio has largely been the forgotten ad media in the 2nd District. But with an eye toward Black turnout for U.S. Rep. Elaine Luria, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has invested $20,000 in radio spots on WOWI, a Hip-hop and R&B station in Norfolk.
Meanwhile, Republican Scott Taylor’s latest ’s TV spot has him back in response mode, this time on Luria’s claims that he would weaken healthcare protections for people with pre-existing conditions. The 30-second ad features Howard and Mirella, a local couple who said Taylor -- who served in Congress from 2017-19 -- helped them get life-saving drugs for Mirella. “We know first-hand that Scott Taylor will always protect people with pre-existing conditions.”

By reserving nearly $1 million in airtime in late October, the Republican Congressional Leadership Fund has begun to close the gap in TV ad spending in the unexpectedly competitive 5th District race.
Halloween is still nearly two weeks away, but the airwaves in the largely rural districts are filled with horror stories aimed at seniors. The way Republican Bob Good tells it, Democrat Cameron Webb supports a “radical” government takeover of healthcare that would force everyone onto the same government-run plan and “end Medicare as we know it.”

As the Democratic House Majority PAC tells it, Good once worked for a “predatory” payday lender and now, as a congressional candidate, the Republican has a “new scam” -- a budget proposal that would “jeopardize Medicare” and “cut Social Security.”

Candidates in the 7th District continue a back-and-forth on small businesses. Representative Abigail Spanberger has a bright and sunny ad -- shot in idyllic downtown Orange -- in which the first-term Democrat explains her efforts to get small businesses the relief they need during the pandemic. At the end, “Endorsed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce” appears on the screen.

Nick Freitas’ latest spot has a funeral tone, as several small business owners talk about the losses they have suffered. “Abigail Spanberger has failed this community,” declares an Orange County dairy farmer. “We’re fighting to get by and she’s only making things worse.”

Weekly spending in Virginia

Facebook had been the one media type where both presidential candidates were nearly matched in spending in Virginia. But in the past month President Trump’s spending has dropped off. Biden has taken a significant lead, more than doubling the President’s spending in the past 4 weeks.

The race for Virginia’s US Senate seat remains lopsided, based on ad spending this year. Incumbent Senator Mark Warner (D) has spent nearly four times as much as his opponent Daniel Gade (R). Without any spending help from outside groups, the gap in spending has continued to widen over the past two weeks.
