The situation in Niger is critical. Historic flooding has displaced more than 500,000 people from their homes, and entire neighborhoods have been destroyed. Farming is the main industry in Niger, and the loss of cultivated land and thousands of farm animals is devastating.
"I couldn't save my belongings, the water was up to my neck, I saved my children and now I have nothing left, not even a grain of rice," said Kadidja, a mother of 7 children.
Oxfam aims to provide assistance to families impacted by the flooding by distributing food and kits with essential supplies and conducting public health awareness campaigns about how to stay healthy following the flooding. We'll also support farming households as they revive their agricultural activities. We urgently need your help to carry out our efforts in Niger while continuing our ongoing work for those living in poverty worldwide.

In West Africa, including in Niger, a hunger crisis had already been spreading even before the floods. Climate change has led to an increase in natural disasters, such as flooding and droughts, which have devastated crops in the region. The COVID-19 pandemic has also caused lockdown measures and market closures, meaning even those who can harvest food may be unable to sell it. This most recent round of flooding is an emergency on top of multiple crises.
We're working to help people impacted by hunger crises and COVID-19 worldwide – but we urgently need more support for families facing these critical conditions in Niger. Providing assistance to families affected by these floods and continuing our work supporting people living in poverty around the world is only possible with the commitment of the Oxfam community.
