Over the last four years, we have been at the forefront of standing up to Donald Trump’s disastrous, cruel, and morally abhorrent policies, and exposing his wrong-doing for all of America to see.
There were days when we woke up exhausted by the sheer number of lies, outrages, and abuses. But we never gave up the fight, and I truly believe there is light at the end of this very dark tunnel.
But we can’t get complacent no matter what the polls say. Trump certainly won’t stop. And we can’t allow those who support him in Congress to escape judgement by the voters either.
The last month has only crystalized what is at stake. After Trump came down with COVI9-19 following a White House super-spreader event, many hoped that his brush with the virus would cause him to take it seriously, wear a mask, and urge others to do so. Instead, he did the exact opposite, modeling the worst behavior, and sending the message to Americans that the virus that has killed 215,000 Americans was no big deal. He acted like every American had their own team of dozens of doctors and could obtain any therapy they desired.
Now as he sinks in the polls, Trump is getting desperate. He’s spreading conspiracy theories and disinformation about Joe Biden and everyone else, including me. Trump even openly refused to denounce white supremacists and conspiracy theorists like QAnon. And at his rally last night in Michigan, where the governor was the subject of a kidnapping plot, he egged on the crowd until they chanted “lock her up.” Just despicable, and dangerous.
But even with all of that, even with all of the horrors of the last four years, I have to tell you that I’m still hopeful. I truly am. I couldn’t get up in the morning, and do what I do if I wasn’t. I’m hopeful because of you.
Because America is not just a country, it’s also an idea — an idea in which all of us have a say in our future. We stand up – together – to protect the rights of the marginalized and downtrodden, to fight for what’s right, and to work to make real, lasting change and progress.
Those things don’t matter to Donald Trump. They never will. All that matters to him is what is best for Donald Trump. And we’ve seen that not only during the last few months, but over the last four years.
Right doesn’t matter to Donald Trump. Truth doesn’t matter to Donald Trump. And decency matters not at all to Donald Trump. Not even in a pandemic that’s taken over 215,000 American lives.
But right, truth, and decency still matter to us. And it’s up to us during these next two weeks to stand up, make our voices heard, and make the margin of victory so big, so convincing, that even Donald Trump and his loyal sycophants will have no choice but to slink away.
