John, Friend, most efforts and media attention on gun violence focus on the shooter. But the guns used in crimes don’t just appear out of nowhere, right?

The truth is that negligent and reckless crime gun dealers are the overwhelming source behind these shooters. In fact, an astounding 5% of gun dealers are responsible for 90% of recovered guns used in crimes. That’s why in order to prevent gun violence, we need to talk about the “supply-side” of the illegal gun market.

Brady’s Combating Crime Guns initiative is the only program of its kind — and our supply-side approach targets the reckless and irresponsible gun industry actors who are contributing to and profiting from gun violence. Gun dealer negligence fuels everyday gun violence in America, and the flow of illegal guns into neighborhoods disproportionately harms Black and Brown and communities and drives urban homicide. That’s why addressing the supply-side of gun violence is also a racial justice issue.

We need to do more than focus on the perpetrators of violence. We need to go to the source. That way, we can unite all stakeholders — policy makers, community members, and law enforcement alike — to enact policies to identify, regulate, and reform reckless gun dealer practices. And that's how we can reduce gun homicide and shooting rates in even our most impacted neighborhoods.
