Among national security experts, 79 percent think the United States would prevail in a conflict with China in the Western Pacific today, but just 54 percent think that would be true ten years from now.

At the height of the space race with the Soviet Union in the 1960s, federal funding for Research and Development (R&D) represented over 1.6 percent of GDP. By 2017, government funding for all types of R&D declined to 0.6 percent of GDP.
