The late poet and civil rights advocate Maya Angelou once said: “Hate, it has caused a lot of problems in the world, but has not solved one yet.” It was true when she said it, and it is true today. Hate causes many problems and doesn’t solve any. Yet hate is on the march, evidenced by a 20% increase in the number of hate groups just since 2014, repeated mass shootings, and relentless scapegoating and demonization of immigrants.

Solving the problem takes commitment and persistence and patience . . . and love, understanding and common decency.
