Friend,

After recent debates, it can’t go without being said again: there is no excuse for Breonna Taylor’s death. But time and time again, we see law enforcement try to justify their targeting, harassing, assaulting, and killing of Black people. And they try to use drug involvement - real or perceived - to do it.

But the truth is, gunning someone down in their own bed as they sleep is simply unconscionable. And for that, the drug war deserves blame.

It’s because of the drug war that we have no-knock warrants. It’s because of the drug war that we have police forces with the money for military-grade weapons and SWAT training.

And it’s because of the drug war that we earmark federal funds for police departments with the highest arrest rate - fostering unhealthy competition, unnecessary force in arrests, and lethal interactions like the one that took Breonna’s life. Had it not been for the drug war, Breonna Taylor would be alive today.

Friend, it’s time to end the drug war, end the government overreach, and stop wasting more than $47 billion dollars a year to terrorize people in their own homes and communities -people who are disproportionately Black, Latinx, and Indigenous. That’s why I need you to make a donation today.

The war on drugs has always been a tool of racial oppression. The very first drug laws were targeted at communities of color. While everyone suffers under drug laws, they are at their most vicious and deadly when used as originally intended – against people of color, and particularly Black people.

At DPA, we will continue fighting to abolish the drug war funding that fuels the militarization of law enforcement. We will continue fighting to remove drug involvement as a cover for disregarding the dignity and sanctity of human life. We will continue to challenge policing practices and hold these institutions accountable. But we can only do it with your support.

%Preferred Name%%, we must terminate this connection between drugs and policing. Ending the drug war won’t end racism, but it will help undo a system that chips away daily at the very core of humanity. If you can, please make a donation to help us end this drug war today.
