As get out the vote and fundraising and compliance deadlines approach, it’s more important than ever to avoid Two-Factor Authentication issues by downloading your backup codes now. Whether you're using an authenticator app or SMS, be sure to follow the instructions below. If you’ve already downloaded them, make sure you know where they’re located.
What are backup codes?
Backup codes are an alternate form of Two-Factor Authentication used when you’re unable to receive the SMS message or access your authenticator app. This may be due to local phone service issues delaying SMS messages, a new phone number that you haven’t updated in your Two-Factor Authentication settings, or a new phone where you have not set up your authenticator app yet.
Backup codes are one-time use codes associated with your ActionID - your login for your database, MiniVAN, or Open Virtual Phone Bank. You should download or print these backup codes and store them in a safe place where you can find them later. You will only need to use these backup codes in the event that you can no longer enter the ActionID verification code or use your authenticator app when trying to log into one of these applications.
How do I download my backup codes?
You will need to log in to acquire your backup codes. We recommend doing this as soon as possible to avoid losing access during a crucial time.
While logged in, click your name in the top right corner > Manage Profile > Manage my ActionID Profile. This will take you to your ActionID profile page. This is also the page that you will need to access to update your phone number or authenticator app after you regain access with your backup codes.
Under Two-Factor Authentication, View your backup codes.
Then Download and/or Print the 10 backup codes to store in a secure offline location.
Each code can only be used once, so it's a good idea to cross out or remove the ones you use for the next time you need to rely on backup codes to regain access to the system. Additionally, you can always regenerate new codes if you ever need new ones or lose access to the original list.
How do I use my backup codes when I have lost access to my device or phone number used for Two-Factor Authentication?
If you lose your phone or for any reason the usual Two-Factor Authentication isn’t working for you, you can choose Use backup codes, which will prompt you to enter in a backup code.
Alternatively, if you’ve set up another Two-Factor Authentication device, you will be able to select that option.
After you’ve regained access, we recommend navigating to the ActionID Profile page again and updating your phone number and/or setting up an authenticator app. To do so, click your name in the top right > Manage Profile > Manage ActionID Profile.
