Worth a Review: Indigenous rights and environmental justice
Last Monday was Indigenous People’s Day, but it’s not enough to honor Native peoples one day out of the year. The fight for Indigenous rights and lands is part of the fight for environmental justice.
Though Indigenous peoples make up just 5 percent of the world’s population, they oversee 22 percent of the land and 85 percent of the planet’s biodiversity. However, these communities are some of the hardest hit by climate change. Tribes in southern Louisiana became America’s first climate refugees when sea-level rise erased their ancestral land. In California, Indigenous community-led groups are working to correct decades of forest mismanagement and prevent catastrophic wildfires by sharing traditional knowledge of controlled burns.
Native people have also been hit especially hard by COVID-19. Fenceline communities are even more vulnerable to the virus because fossil fuel companies have polluted Indigenous lands and poisoned the water. And the federal government is taking advantage of this crisis to push forward even more fossil fuel projects. In New Mexico, where Native people comprise 56 percent of COVID-19 cases and just 11 percent of the population, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) pushed forward an online comment period for fracking permits in the Greater Chaco Region, a place of cultural and spiritual importance for the local tribes. The BLM willfully ignored that the affected communities were facing the pandemic and lacked Internet access. The Trump administration continues to disregard and disrespect Native peoples and their rights.
Respecting the rights of Native communities is a commitment that Vice President Joe Biden made explicit in his plan for Tribal Nations. This plan is expansive, long overdue, and thorough. It will address health disparities, restore tribal lands, ensure Native Americans can exercise their right to vote, and much more.
