Dear Green American, Did you know October 19th-25th is National Estate Planning Awareness Week? Started in2008, this week was created to spread the word about the importance of planning ahead. This year, Green America wants to help you start thinking about the future by debunking a few common misconceptions about estate planning. 1. It’s too early for me to think about my will! Incorrect, it is NEVER too early to start planning ahead. Whether you are eighteen or eighty, having a will can give you peace of mind that your wishes and loved ones are taken care of, no matter what. You can always make updates as needed. 2. I wrote my will after I got married 20 years ago, so I’m set! Is that so? What about all the things that have changed in the past 20 years? Have you acquired property? Do you have children? Are there organizations or a cause you care about you’d like to support? Life changes fast, so it is recommended that your will is updated every five years to account for these events. 3. Estate Planning is always so expensive! This is simply not true! Green America has partnered with FreeWill to provide you a free, online resource that guides you through the process of creating a legally valid will in 20 minutes or less. And if you would prefer to finalize your wishes with an attorney, use FreeWill to create a list of documented wishes to give yourself a head start and save time at the lawyer’s office. | |
