** Water Drop

Empty bottles, empty cans, empty crates. Refilled crates, climbed rocks, pushed through hot sand. Together. As a team.

This group has been working together, week after week for over 6 months straight to make sure that the same amount of life-saving items and water are being left out in the desert as in pre-COVID desert visits.

Temperatures are beginning to drop and have been just below 100°, at times. Once the weather cools down and the pandemic-related outbreaks are under control, we will start to include volunteers in the water drops. Thank you all for your patience and understanding.

In the meanwhile, donations of water gallons (non-milk jug style), pop-top canned food, socks and bandanas are appreciated. Keep on sharing our social media posts!

** Familias Reunidas
Bond Program

This week Border Angels and immigration attorney Cassandra Borjon successfully freed another person from detention through our Families Reunidas Bond Program. Eduardo is a 22-year-old Nicaraguan asylum seeker who was in detention for 2 months. He was detained at the Imperial Valley Regional Detention Center, another facility with confirmed cases and blatant disregard for COVID safety guidelines.

Eduardo is now headed to Miami to begin a new chapter in life with his father and sponsor. That is because of you, our supporters.

We need your help to get more migrants like Eduardo out of immigration prisons. The support and donations we have receive during the last few months have helped over 50 migrants! But, our bond fund is running low and we need more of your support to continue helping the mothers, fathers, and loved ones that are still detained.

According to government data, there were over 48,000 migrants in detention during FY2019, across 200 immigration prisons. California has some of the highest rates of migrants in detention.

We cannot stress enough the urgency of bonding people out, as we have now seen 21 confirmed deaths in ICE custody.

** Shelter Aid

Just as all of us have been forced to adapt to the state of the world, Border Angels has done the same in order to better serve our beloved migrant community. As we have mentioned in the past, Tijuana shelters have been hit hard by this pandemic since so many of them depended on all types of physical cross-border donations, including food and water.

Since we are not able to deliver physical donations at the moment, we instead continue to support them with funds so they can pay utility bills, rent, purchase groceries, and to repair their vans, which was their most recent need. Our friends at Casa de Oración del Migrante were able to fix their van, which allows them to purchase groceries on their own. They even shared with us one of the delicious meals they prepared!

We are only able to continue this amazing work because of your continued support, GRACIAS!
Our friend and shelter director Pastor Altamirano shared with us a bittersweet thank you for our support in paying for one of his shelter family’s going away dinner. The family loves seafood and Pastor Altamirano planned a fried fish dinner with the help of everyone at Camino de Salvación.

This woman and her child had been waiting for their asylum case to be heard since March, which had been repeatedly postponed to the point that she decided to return to her home country.

Regrettably, this is the case of so many waiting at the Tijuana shelters, due to horrible policies like MPP (Migrant Protection Protocols) forcing people to “remain in Mexico” to await their case to be heard. This policy shuts the doors to migrants – instead of welcoming them to the US, they are forced to wait in Mexico with little assistance.

It is maddening that this mother and child have to return their country, one which they fled, because of adverse policies. We are thankful to have been able to celebrate with her before her journey.

We want to give an enormous thank you to Jennifer, San Diego Mesa College, and all of the organizations present during yesterday’s “Borderlands & Activism” panel in honor of Indigenous People’s Day. We are so grateful to have been a part of a space of love and healing which acknowledged the struggle and resistance to colonization, and highlighted the importance of activism, particularly in the borderlands.

Activism starts with you, and finds its strength in community and collaboration. Gracias to everyone that was a part of this event to celebrate Indigenous People’s Day!

"A federal appeals court ruled late Friday that President Donald Trump’s use of his emergency powers to build his long-promised border wall with military funds is illegal, striking a blow to one of his signature campaign promises just weeks before the November election.

The 2-1 decision from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals comes as $3.6 billion was slated for construction of about a dozen projects, including two projects in the Laredo and El Paso areas. The money was diverted from funds dedicated for military construction after the president declared a national emergency in February 2019 to tap the funds. The projects in Texas would have covered more than 60 miles, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.

“The courts have once again confirmed what everyone knows: Trump’s fake ‘national emergency’ was just another pretext for targeting immigrants and border communities,” said Dror Ladin, a senior staff attorney with the ACLU's National Security Project. “It’s past time for Trump to finally give up on trying to raid the federal budget for his wasteful and illegal project.”"

"A national protest is widening over the pending deportations of dozens of Cameroon-born immigrants who lawyers and other advocates say were abused in U.S. detention centers and could face death if sent back to their homeland.

The immigrants, many of them asylum-seekers, were transferred in recent days to the civil detention center in Alvarado, about an hour southwest of Dallas. Four detained Camerooonians said in phone interviews from Prairieland Detention Center that they feared they would be tortured or killed if returned to their violence-plagued homeland."

Colleges see surge in enrollment by children of immigrant families: study

"Universities and colleges across the U.S. are seeing a large shift in student demographics with more than 5.3 million of all enrolled college students coming from immigrant families, according to a ** new study reported by The New York Times. ([link removed][UNIQID])

The study, released on Thursday, showed that the percentage of first-generation and immigrant students increased from 20 percent in 2000 to nearly 30 percent in 2018. The surge has surpassed the growth of enrollment by U.S.-born students of parents who were also born in the United States.

Enrollment in higher education by immigrant and first-generation students has accounted for 58 percent of overall growth in student numbers over the 18 year period."

Supreme Court Rules That Census Count Can Be Cut Short

After extending the deadline to count every person in America, a process complicated by the coronavirus pandemic, the Trump administration reversed course. Critics saw a political motive.

The brief unsigned order formally only pauses the population count while the administration and a host of groups advocating a more accurate census battle in a federal appeals court over whether the count could be stopped early.

As a practical matter, however, it almost certainly ensures an early end because the census — one of the largest government activities, involving hundreds of thousands of workers — cannot be easily restarted and little time remains before its current deadline at the end of this month. In fact, some census workers say, the bureau had already begun shutting down some parts of its count despite a court order to continue it."
