Dear Friend,

Hurricane Dorian made landfall on The Bahamas September 1, 2019, leaving devastation in its wake.

A nearly 20-foot storm surge inundated the drinking water supply on the islands with saltwater. Dorian’s sustained 185 mph winds ripped open the covers of several large oil storage tanks on East Grand Bahama, contaminating significant coastal habitat, as well as freshwater sources for local residents. In the coming days, the lack of water for drinking, bathing, and cooking will become more pervasive adding to stress on those already displaced.

The time to support the Bahamas Relief Effort is now!

Waterkeeper Alliance has four member organizations in the Bahamas—Bimini Coastal Waterkeeper, Clifton Western Bays Waterkeeper, Grand Bahama Coastal Waterkeeper, and Waterkeepers Bahamas, and they are already taking action!

Since Dorian made landfall on the Bahamas, Rashema Ingraham, Executive Director of Waterkeepers Bahamas and Bimini Coastal Waterkeeper, has been working on response efforts. Despite the damage to her own home, Rashema has been on the ground providing key support to residents affected by the relentless storm. Rashema and the team of Waterkeepers in the Bahamas have been in their communities delivering food, water, and supplies for residents to begin healing from the trauma of the storm and to start the process of rebuilding.

However, there is much, much more to do, and a sustained effort is required to return to the Bahamas we once knew.
Rashema and the Waterkeepers Bahamas team are seeking funds for the following items:
* Drinking water;
* Portable showers;
* Sterilizing tablets for impacted water sources;
* Water Tanks for treated water storage;
* Individual Water Filtration Systems; and
* Water Sampling Equipment for testing water in the groundwater, wells, and at local beaches.

In post-storm situations such as this, sanitation is essential to both ensure human dignity and prevent the spread of disease. Waterkeeper Alliance, and the more than 300 Waterkeepers globally, work everyday to protect clean water as a basic human right. That is their pledge to you.

We are proud to have our Waterkeepers in the Bahamas on the frontlines during this crisis, and we hope you will support their work to protect their communities, clean water, and the Bahamas from the impacts of this storm.
Sincerely,

Marc Yaggi
Executive Director
