Today was the final day of Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding her nomination by President Trump to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.
Next week, the committee will vote on approving her confirmation, with a full Senate vote expected just one week before Election Day on November 3. In a naked partisan power grab, Republicans are breaking their own precedent from 2016 by rushing through this process.
President Trump promised a Supreme Court nominee who would overturn the Affordable Care Act -- and Republicans are counting on Judge Amy Coney Barrett to do just that on the Supreme Court. We can’t stand by while Republicans confirm another justice who supports their agenda.
There is an orange cloud hanging over the confirmation of Judge Barrett -- and the timing is certainly suspect. Why are Republicans in such a hurry to confirm a Supreme Court Justice when voting has already started across the country? No justice has ever been confirmed this close to an election -- but the GOP needs a Justice Barrett on the Court to decide on the fate of the ACA.
On November 10, just one week after the election, Republicans will be arguing at the Supreme Court that the ACA is unconstitutional -- and that millions of people in Illinois and across the nation should lose their access to affordable health care and pre-existing condition protections.
That’s what’s on the line in this fight -- and why we need to keep speaking out and fighting back.
