** Gwynne launches annual local business awards
------------------------------------------------------------



Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has opened nominations for his 2020 Local Business Awards.

Gwynne is encouraging constituents to nominate their favourite local businesses from across the constituency for the awards, which celebrate their contribution to the local economy and communities.

Last year, over 4,000 nominations were received from constituents for over 250 local businesses across Audenshaw, Denton, Dukinfield and Reddish. There were winners for each of the 7 wards that make up the constituency and one overall winner.

The winner of the awards will be announced on Small Business Saturday, which this year is 5 December.

Andrew Gwynne said:

“It was been an incredibly difficult time for our local businesses. The pandemic and lockdown have threatened the survival of many and it is clear that we are still some way from a return to anything like normality.


“This makes it more important than ever that we celebrate the local businesses that we love and the contribution they make to our lives and communities.


“I would encourage all constituents to show their appreciation by nominating their favourites on my website.”

** Gwynne urges constituents to sign Rashford’s child food poverty petition
------------------------------------------------------------



Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, is encouraging constituents to sign Marcus Rashford’s petition to end child food poverty.

Rashford, who plays football for Manchester United and is from Wythenshawe, was previously successful in campaigning for the Government to extend free school meals over the summer holiday this year.

His petition, which has over 200,000 signatures, calls on the Government to implement 3 recommendations from the National Food Strategy, by allocating money to:
* Expand free school meals to all under-16s where a parent or guardian is in receipt of Universal Credit or equivalent benefit
* Provide meals & activities during all holidays
* Increase the value of Healthy Start vouchers to at least £4.25 per week, and expand the scheme.

Andrew Gwynne said:

“Marcus Rashford’s campaigning on the issue of food poverty has been inspirational and I strongly support his calls to the Government to implement these recommendations.


“This would cost far less than the “Eat Out To Help Out” scheme – if the Government is happy to pay for people’s Nandos, they should be willing to provide the funding needed to feed children facing food poverty.


“I’d encourage everyone across the Denton and Reddish constituency to get behind this campaign and sign the petition.”

** Gwynne slams broken promises on UK food standards
------------------------------------------------------------



Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has expressed his extreme disappointment with the Government for failing to protect food standards.

Yesterday (12 October), in votes on the Agriculture Bill, the Conservative Government rejected proposals to require imported food to meet domestic legal standards from 1 January when the transition period ends.

This means that the UK could be forced to accept lower food standards to secure a future US trade deal. This could mean the import of products like chlorinated chicken or beef fattened with hormones and the potential for British farmers to be undercut.

Andrew Gwynne said:

“I am very disappointed, but sadly not surprised, that this Conservative Government has failed to back British farmers.


“The Government have said that they will maintain food and animal welfare standards after Brexit but every time the opportunity presents itself to do so, they fail to take it.


“British farmers – and British consumers – deserve so much better.”

In Parliament - particularly if you're only able to participate virtually - there is a lot of luck involved in getting the opportunity to speak. Unfortunately, this week I didn't have much luck - fingers crossed for next week!

📺 WATCH: This week at Home Affairs Select Committee we had Wendy Williams giving evidence about her ‘Lessons Learned’ review into the Windrush debacle.

It was an absolute disgrace that people who had moved to the UK in the 1950s, as British subjects, and have lived here for most or all of their lives, were treated in the way they had been by the Home Office in recent years. That loss of institutional knowledge of the Windrush generation was at the heart of these actions.

I asked about the culture at the Home Office and what changes need to be made to ensure events like this never happen again.

📻 LISTEN: Yesterday, I joined John Pienaar on Times Radio to discuss restrictions in Greater Manchester. I told him that our City Region doesn’t want to be a guinea pig for Boris Johnson's Tier 3, which even the Chief Medical Officer says won’t work.
Community Board

For the first time, the charity Children's Hospital Pyjamas is collecting donations of children's pyjamas in Greater Manchester.

These will go to Tameside Hospital, Stepping Hill Hospital and MRI Hospital for Children.

🎃 REDDISH HALLOWEEN PICTURE HUNT🎃
This year Trick or Treating has been cancelled due to the current pandemic.

Halloween is going to be a little bit different this year, so why not put a Halloween Picture in your window as a trail for children, and big ones, to follow.

To get involved put a Halloween picture in your window, similar to the Rainbow Hunt, for others to spot.

Please display your pictures during the week of 26th-31st October for a week of fun and hunting.

As we are unable to give halloween treats out if parents wish too they can give their child a treat for each pumpkin they spot on their hunt.
