Public transport needs support – tell the Chancellor why

Hello

I hope this email finds you well. I'm writing to you about something very important today: the future of public transport.

The effect of Covid-19 on public transport has been seismic. Rail journeys are at their lowest since the mid-nineteenth century, and bus use is teetering at just over half of pre-lockdown levels.

But we also know that buses, trams and trains will have a vital role to play in a green recovery and a fair, healthy, sustainable future. They will be essential to cutting carbon emissions and air pollution, and making sure that everyone can access opportunities and lead full lives.

Public transport needs support more than ever before, to protect and renew it for the future.

Later this autumn the Government will publish its spending review, setting out its spending plans for the coming months and years. We're writing to the Chancellor about the importance of supporting public transport, as well as walking and cycling, and we'd like to include lots of comments from people who use and care about transport – people like you.

Add your comments to our letter to the Chancellor

You may also like to write to your own MP about the importance of supporting public transport in the spending review, and ask your MP to pass your email on to the Chancellor. We'd very much like to see any reply that the Chancellor sends to your MP - please send it on to us at [email protected]. You may find this blog helpful in writing your message to your MP.

A new Chief Executive for Campaign for Better Transport

As Darren Shirley mentioned in his last message, he has now moved on from Campaign for Better Transport: here's Darren's farewell blog. I'm very pleased to tell you that Paul Tuohy will be joining us as our new Chief Executive in November and will write to you soon; find out more about Paul

In the meantime I hope you don't mind me writing to you about this subject which is deeply important to me and to so many people. Let's tell the Chancellor why public transport matters to our lives and deserves support.

With best wishes

Jess
