Dear Colleague,
Georgetown University issued an index of which U.S. states are best for women, inspired by the UN Security Council’s Women, Peace, and Security agenda. The Security Council’s resolutions do not explicitly call for abortion to be part of the strategy, and neither does the global index previously created by Georgetown. But this U.S. index—created by a Catholic university—gives low grades to states that have few abortion clinics or require counseling before an abortion. I report.
While the U.S. remains a leader on pro-life issues at the UN, it remains part of the “LGBTI Core Group” at the UN, despite the fact that this creates conflicts with the U.S.’s positions in support of life and the family. This group recently delivered a statement to the UN insisting that transgender surgeries are essential during the pandemic and urging countries to “evaluate their normative structures” with regard to gender and sexuality. Stefano Gennarini, J.D. reports.
