Hello John!
What a joy it has been to share first-hand accounts throughout Hispanic Heritage
Month from LULAC members and community leaders whose lives are about heartfelt
service to others. Their stories inspire us and are a vivid reflection of our
community’s deep passion for making a difference and the many ways we can affirm
each other every day.
Yes, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought hardship and deep personal loss, and we
will not soon forget its heavy toll on Latinos in the United States and Puerto
Rico. Yet, we celebrate the resilience of our people and our hope for the future
is stronger than ever. Indeed, our resolve to survive and overcome tragedy is
unstoppable. We celebrate our roots in being part of this great country and honor
our legacy of building every aspect of our democracy, even when our contributions
are not recognized. (Pop quiz: what states were ceded to the U.S. with the
Guadalupe Hidalgo Treaty?)
We honor and are forever grateful for all the sweat, blood, and tears our
families have shed to build a better life. And we treasure the energy and
excitement of a new generation of advocates dedicating their lives to act on a
vision of what’s possible in a better world for all.
Our work is far from over, and we urgently need your help to take on the battles
LULAC is confronting! We're asking you to directly support our communities in
need by contributing to our programs and services as if our very lives depend on
it --- because they do, believe us. Your donation will be doubled - up to a total
of $20,000 - thanks to a generous match from Walmart. To our long-time friends
and the new ones we are meeting, our hearts are grateful for your love shown to
the work of LULAC. We are a family and we know you will help us reach our goal.
LULAC and its nationwide network of councils will continue to launch programs and
services wherever possible in response to the current health crisis. We can and
we must. Learn more about our mission and work at LULAC.org [ [link removed] ] .
Thank you for all you do to support our communities across the U.S. and Puerto
Rico. Children, seniors, LGTBQ, veterans, immigrants, women confronting
inequalities and domestic violence, legal litigation (hello Texas), COVID-19
dangers in the workplace for our essential workers --- the list is long. Yet,
together we are a movement for change, and we will not stop calling for justice
until our dream of equality, opportunity, and social change is fulfilled. I feel
truly blessed to be part of this family we call LULAC.
In solidarity and hermandad,
Sindy Benavides
LULAC National CEO
