Back in July, I reached out about an important Senate race in a state that for too long went overlooked: Mississippi.

Now, after seeing a surge of grassroots support across the country, Democratic candidate Mike Espy is just one point behind his Republican opponent in the polls — something many people assumed was impossible.

My friend Senator Brian Schatz and I recently teamed up on Twitter to support Mike. Our goal: Raise $100,000 in grassroots donations to help the Espy campaign get the resources they need to succeed.

After we set our goal, Senator Schatz and I got some other Senate colleagues to help as well. Even my girlfriend, Rosario Dawson, got in on the fun.

It’s clear: There is some incredible energy and enthusiasm behind this race right now. In fact, the race was just upgraded from “Safe Republican” to “Likely Republican” by election forecasters, moving Mike closer to victory.
