Friend – TONIGHT: Ahead of the November 3 general election, Alaskans must be armed with the knowledge to combat the very real threat of voter suppression. Please join us for a free screening of the documentary, "Rigged: The Voter Suppression Playbook" and stick around for a conversation about voter suppression and voting rights in Alaska.
The award-winning documentary exposes the nefarious tactics used to suppress the vote and serves to spark discussion on the actions needed to protect our democracy. Shot principally during the 2016 election, the film tracks a systematic, decade-long effort to reverse the impact of the growing demographic tide of non-white and younger voters who helped elect President Barack Obama in 2008. It details a variety of voter suppression "plays," or tactics, ranging from the purging of voting rolls and the passing of new, restrictive voter ID laws to gerrymandering and voter intimidation. It is narrated by Tony & Emmy award-winning actor, Jeffrey Wright. After the film, the ACLU of Alaska team will join the community for a conversation about voting rights in Alaska. This conversation could not be timelier and comes only days after a victory in the Alaska Supreme Court that waives the suppressive witness signature requirement for absentee voting in the upcoming election. See you there! ACLU of Alaska |
