John, I didn't want to have to send an email like this today. I thought there were still some things in politics that were sacred. But our anti-environment legislative leaders just proved me wrong in the most shameful way.
Yesterday, leaders told members there would be no votes this morning. So most members of the minority party were absent, some of them at 9/11 memorial services.
So first thing today, they took this chance and held a surprise vote to override Gov. Cooper’s veto of their horrible pro-polluter budget.
Leaders didn’t have the votes to override the budget veto if all members were present, as they had been for months and months.
This isn’t how a functioning, democratic government is supposed to work. But it’s par for the course with this crew.
Enough is enough! We must defeat them next year, and elect honest leaders who will do right by the people of North Carolina.
It’s bad enough they pass these pro-polluter bills to begin with. Bad enough that Gov. Cooper has had to veto more bills than any governor in history.
Now it’s up to us to change how things are done. We’re launching an unprecedented campaign to flip the leadership in at least one chamber of the General Assembly next year and to re-elect our environmental champion governor.
We need your help to turn our Green Caucus into a majority caucus, so we can move a positive environmental agenda forward that will protect people’s rights to clean air, clean water, clean energy, and to vote in free and fair elections.
If you’re as sick of the bad headlines that embarrass our state as I am, then chip in today. Show these bad-faith leaders where you stand, John.
