Dear John,

[ [link removed] ]Support the March for
Our Lives gun plan

For too long, our nation has been waiting for Washington politicians
cowering in fear of the NRA to act on gun violence. Now it's time to let
the survivors of gun violence take the lead.

The students who survived the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas
High School in Florida inspired millions by refusing to be quiet in the
wake of tragedy. Instead, they launched the March for Our Lives and spoke
out, even if it meant facing right-wing slurs and media criticism.

March for Our Lives just released perhaps the boldest gun control plan
yet.^1 In the wake of even more mass shootings, it's long past time to
start changing the conversation from half-measures to real change.

The March for Our Lives organizers are trying to change the terms of the
debate. Congress is currently stuck in the mud arguing over small – though
important – proposals like red flag laws. We have reached the point where
any action at all would seem like a big victory, even though what we truly
need is ambitious change to end the gun violence epidemic in America. Big
"C.H.A.N.G.E." is exactly what March for Our Lives is proposing:^2

* Change gun ownership standards, including a national licensing system,
a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and a mandatory
national gun buy-back program.
* Halve the rate of gun deaths within a decade by declaring a national
emergency and setting a goal of saving 200,000 lives by cutting gun
injuries and deaths by 50%.
* Accountability for the gun lobby by repealing laws designed to protect
the gun industry, launching FEC and IRS investigations into the NRA,
and challenging past legal decisions that shield the gun lobby.
* Name a director of gun violence prevention who reports directly to the
president to coordinate the efforts of agencies too long sabotaged by
the gun lobby, such as the Department of Health and Human Services,
the Centers for Disease Control, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
Firearms and Explosives.
* Generate intersectional, community-based solutions that tackle the
many dimensions of gun violence – urban violence reduction programs,
mental health and suicide prevention, domestic violence prevention –
and address police violence in our communities.
* Empower the next generation by automatically registering all eligible
voters on their 18th birthday and creating a peace corps equivalent
for gun violence prevention.

The young March for Our Lives organizers want to set a new gold standard
for 2020 and every year beyond. Every signature in support of their plan
puts pressure on elected officials and candidates to boldly confront gun
violence.
