Pick up your phones and put on your sneakers, because the #DefundHate week of action is underway! This week our Members of Congress are returning from recess to pass and debate must-pass appropriations bills that fund the government.
All week, we’re calling, writing, and getting on the streets — we are asking Congress to use these bills to restrict the Trump administration’s efforts to harm immigrants.
In our government of checks and balances, Congress holds the power of the purse through appropriations. Candidates campaigned in 2018 on the promise they would use that power for the good of us all, and we voted for them on that basis.
With appropriation bills coming due at the end of September, now is the time for Congress to boldly use its power to #DefundHate.
Monday was a national call-in day; according to Indivisible National, over 2,700 people across the country acted. Let’s continue flooding the phone lines — our MoCs are uniquely positioned to lead in defunding hate!
Get out your neighbors to call! Join us Friday, Sept 13, at our #DefundHate teach-in event, 4:30pm at Harry Bridges Plaza, across from the Ferry Building on the San Francisco Embarcadero. We will use interactive art, mapping the routes of our own immigration, and handing out flyers so people can call their MoC’s! RSVP here. ([link removed][UNIQID])
Call your MoC’s today — demand that they #DefundHate!
Call your Representative ([link removed][UNIQID]#house-rep-profiles) and Senators ([link removed][UNIQID]#senator-profiles) . You can use this general message:
“In upcoming appropriations bills, I urge you to strongly oppose increases in immigration-related funding that furthers the administration’s immigration program. I urge you to eliminate or reduce funds used to separate families, deport law-abiding immigrants, and expand detention facilities. I also ask you to increase funding for humane and just treatment of immigrants.”
Or you can get more specific: We’ve posted the 12 immigration-related Power of the Purse asks from our overall list as a separate immigration-focused list ([link removed][UNIQID]) for easy reference. You can see all of the sixty-seven points listed in our Power of the Purse letter here ([link removed][UNIQID]) .
** Bonus Federal Action: Say NO to Proposed Changes to Guest Worker Program
------------------------------------------------------------
Trump’s Department of Labor has proposed changes to the H-2A visa program that would weaken key protections for farm workers, limiting their ability to obtain employment with H-2A employers and exposing H-2A workers to greater vulnerability and costs.
Well-informed, original public comment can stop bad policies like these. Please submit your comment ([link removed][UNIQID]) by September 24!
