Research suggests that breathing dysfunction following generalized convulsive seizures can lead to Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP). Interruptions in breathing can occur during and after seizures leading to an imbalance of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the body. The ability to restore normal breathing patterns and remove excess carbon dioxide may be weakened in some people with epilepsy, potentially increasing their risk of SUDEP.
In this webinar, Breathing and SUDEP: Research & the Impact of Seizures on the Respiratory System ([link removed]) , Dr. Rup Sainju will provide an introduction to basic concepts and terminology for how the respiratory system functions. He will also provide evidence for breathing dysfunction caused by seizures, as well as review the data for breathing dysfunction as a potential cause as well as a warning sign for SUDEP, and a possible means to intervene and prevent SUDEP.

About the Speaker
[link removed]. Rup Sainju is an Assistant Professor of Neurology and Medical Director of the EEG Lab at University of Iowa Health Care.
Dr. Sainju is a 2016 CURE Epilepsy Award grantee, whose research found ([link removed]) that respiratory response to high carbon-dioxide levels in the blood may be weakened in some people with drug-resistant epilepsy, which puts them at an increased risk for severe breathing abnormalities and SUDEP following a generalized convulsive seizure.
Our mission is to find a cure for epilepsy, by promoting and funding patient-focused research. CURE is a non-profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. Our tax identification number is 36-4253176.
