During today’s questioning, Amy Coney Barrett refused to answer even the most basic questions, while insisting that she could not be held accountable for her record. When a Supreme Court nominee declines to discuss whether a president can defy court orders, pardon himself, or delay the election, it’s an ominous sign for our democracy. As if Barrett’s record on health care isn’t damning enough, she wouldn’t even say if Medicare was constitutional. And, unlike other Republican-appointed justices, Barrett refused to affirm the privacy protections established by Griswold v. Connecticut. Griswold speaks to access to birth control and undergirds the right to abortion and several other protections. So far, all we have are two days of complete evasion. Yet Senate Republicans are ready to confirm Barrett — and have already planned to advance her nomination. But this fight is by no means close to over. We know our messages are breaking through. Our research and outreach have helped drive questions on health care, reproductive rights, civil rights, and other issues. By signing letters, activating on social media, and donating, you can support the fight to #BlockBarrett and let Senate Republicans know that we will not stand by as they nominate judges that threaten our rights. Thank you for all that you do, Nan Aron President |
