Here are 5 loopholes that allow foreign actors to attack our elections

John,

During the 2016 election, Russia targeted election systems in all 50 states and at least 126 million Americans saw disinformation produced by Russian agents.

But despite knowing this, there are still glaring weaknesses in our electoral system that leave us susceptible to future attacks — and Congress refuses to act.

Foreign interference in our elections was, and continues to be, a national emergency.

That’s why today we released a report that shines a light on 5 glaring loopholes that allow foreign interference in our elections, and shows 5 bipartisan ways Congress could act to close them right now.

The report is part of our “Don’t Mess With US” project, which has been building support across the country for critical legislation to secure our elections.

At this very moment, foreigners can hack our election systems, purchase digital ads to spread disinformation, and hire unregistered lobbyists to work on their behalf.

But Congress has the ability to change this — if members decide to put country above party and take action now. By passing the bipartisan election security bills supported by Issue One’s “Don’t Mess With US” project, lawmakers would put foreign powers on notice that we will not allow them to interfere with our democratic process.

Read this important report today to see the ways Congress can – and must – bolster our security to ensure that American elections are decided by Americans.

Thank you,
